Resort shops are expensive and far from what locals buy. Here is where to stock up, where to shop for crafts, and which beach suits you — so you can plan a grocery stop on your airport transfer.

Supermarkets

  • Liberia (airport road): Walmart and PriceSmart.
  • Playas del Coco: Auto Mercado (Pacífico Village), Super Compro, Luperón, Maxi Palí, Mega Super. There's a Sunday morning farmers' market at La Puerta del Sol.
  • Tamarindo: Auto Mercado (Garden Plaza), Super Compro, Super 2001, Super Las Palmeras.
  • Flamingo: Super Flamingo, plus a supermarket in Potrero.

Shopping

  • Tama Market on Saturdays, 8 a.m.–2 p.m.
  • Tamarindo night market on Thursdays, 6–9 p.m.
  • Centro Plaza Liberia.
  • Guaitil: a Chorotega pottery village near Santa Cruz. Combine it with Barra Honda or Palo Verde.

Beaches, one line each

  • Conchal: crushed-shell sand and turquoise water for swimming and snorkeling.
  • Flamingo: a white-sand half moon with calm water and sunsets.
  • Hermosa: grey sand, sheltered and easy for swimming; the closest calm beach to the airport.
  • Panamá: a wide bay with flat water and few people.
  • Coco: dark sand; more a hub for diving and restaurants than for swimming.
  • Ocotal: a small dark-sand cove with snorkeling from the shore.
  • Tamarindo: golden sand, beginner waves and surf schools; the most developed town.
  • Avellanas: a long beach with several surf peaks and a mangrove.
  • Nacascolo: calm, clear water, reached by the free shuttle at the end of Route 253.

Weather

  • Dry season: December to March (April is a transition month).
  • Green season: May to November, with peak rain in September and October.
