Liberia to La Fortuna: Distance, Routes and the Best Stops

Lake Arenal on the drive from Liberia to La Fortuna

Guanacaste gives you beaches. La Fortuna gives you Arenal Volcano, hot springs and rainforest. The drive between them is part of the experience if you choose the right route.

Short answer: Liberia to La Fortuna is about 120–135 km (75–85 miles) and takes around 3 hours without stops. From Papagayo or Coco, plan about 3.5 hours; from Tamarindo, Conchal or Flamingo, about 4 hours.

Route 1: Around Lake Arenal (classic, scenic)

Liberia → Route 1 south → Cañas → Route 142 → Tilarán → Nuevo Arenal → around Lake Arenal → La Fortuna

  • Distance: ~120–135 km · Time: 2.5–3.5 hours without stops
  • Fully paved, no 4x4 needed. Route 1 has two tolls.
  • The lakeside road is beautiful but curvy, narrow and dark at night. Drive it in daylight.
  • Skip GPS "shortcuts" between Cañas and Tilarán: some are steep and unpaved.
  • Stops worth making: Llanos de Cortés waterfall (near Bagaces), Lake Arenal viewpoints and cafés, and Nuevo Arenal for lunch.

Route 2: Via Bijagua and Río Celeste (for nature lovers)

Liberia → Bijagua (~1.25 h) → optional Tenorio Volcano National Park → La Fortuna (~1.25 h)

  • Paved, with some big potholes after Bijagua.
  • Río Celeste adds the famous turquoise waterfall. The hike takes 3–4 hours, so plan a full day or split the trip. See our Río Celeste rainforest walk.
  • Park tickets must be bought online in advance. In your GPS, search for "Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio".

Frequently asked questions

Can I do La Fortuna as a day trip from Guanacaste?

Yes, but it's a long day: 6–8 hours of driving round trip from the beaches. Our Arenal Volcano Full Day tour handles the logistics.

Do I need a 4x4?

No, both main routes are paved.

Is it safe to drive at night?

We don't recommend it on the Lake Arenal road: it's curvy, narrow and has no lights.
