Liberia Airport (LIR) to Your Hotel: The Local Guide

By Rodrigo · Costa Rica Boutique Tour

Happy travelers on their private transfer in Costa Rica

You have landed in Guanacaste. Now you have one small decision: how to get from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) to your beach. The airport sits about 12 km west of downtown Liberia, and most beach resorts are 25 minutes to 2 hours away. Here is what works, from someone who drives these roads every day.

How long does it take to get out of the airport?

Plan on 30–90 minutes from the gate to the curb, and up to 2–2.5 hours on peak Saturdays in high season. Immigration is usually the longest part. Your departure tax (US$29) is normally already included in your ticket.

Before you walk out:

  • SIM card: Kölbi, Claro and Liberty have kiosks in the terminal.
  • Money: there are ATMs in arrivals and departures. US dollars are widely accepted.

Local tips

  1. Stock up on the way. Resort prices are high. The Walmart and PriceSmart in Liberia are right on the airport road, and Auto Mercado has stores in Coco and Tamarindo. Ask for a 20–30 minute grocery stop when you book. More in our beaches, supermarkets & shopping guide.
  2. Landing after dark? Book a private transfer. Rural roads are unlit, and a tired first drive in a new country is not how you want to start.
  3. Traveling with kids? Ask for car seats when you book.
  4. Sharing flight details (flight number and arrival time) lets your driver track delays, so you never pay for waiting.
